A Closer Look at Millersburg's Nesting Swan
By Brian Pitman

Millersburg has long been known for its detailed animal patterns (Big Fish, Trout & Fly, Elks, Dolphin Compote, Peacock and Urn).  Even though they didn't do a huge amount of them, the pattern work was also excellent and creative.  Among the favorites of many collectors, however, is the Nesting Swan.  The Nesting Swan pattern is both simple and clean, but also complex and detailed.  The pattern has lots of flowers, cattails and assorted greenery surrounding a swan nesting on what appears to be reeds.

One of my favorite aspects of this pattern is that it comes in a variety of shapes and colors, and in both radium and satin iridescence.  The pictures on this page show only a few of the shapes and edges.  The colors known include marigold, green and amethyst (typical Millersburg colors) and the really rare blue, honey amber and vaseline.  If you find one in the last three colors, you have really found yourself something valuable and desirable.  Perhaps you will be able to find a vaseline one that has been mistaken for marigold (it has been know to happen).

The typical exterior is Diamond and Fan (don't recollect a different exterior being found on them).  Currently, I own a green ruffled bowl with radium iridescence, and I owned a marigold radium one at one time as well.  I have also seen the blue ice cream bowl that Bob Gallo owned, and it was actually pretty (something that isn't very typical of Millersburg blue, a rare color for the manufacturer).

Bill Edwards and Mike Carwile report that a super rare spittoon whimsey is floating around out there as well, so keep a look out for it.  Look at the pattern carefully if you are new to carnival glass.  Sometimes you can find these in antique shops cheaply, and their desirability always keeps their value at a healthy level.  Millersburg collectors are always looking to add another one to their collection.

This is the Nesting Swan by Millersburg Glass Company of Millersburg, Ohio.
