| 2004 |
The 2004
commemorative is a Ruby Stretch Cuspidor made for us by the Fenton
Art Glass Company. Pressed Ruby (red) is a quixotic color to make,
for it requires controlled re-heating to "strike" and maintain its
vibrant red tones. Selenium and cadmium are used in the glass
batch to produce the splendid ruby color. One of the signature
characteristics of this fabulous shade is the fascinating
variation in tone; occasionally deep ruby throughout, or perhaps
shading more to crimson and even amberina. It's hard to find two
pieces exactly the same.
If the stunning
color wasn't enough, the stretch iridescence is the "charm".
During the manufacturing process, these items were sprayed with a
mixture of metallic salts before being reheated and brought to
their final cuspidor shape by the finisher. The finishing process
often creates a myriad of striations and a slightly rough texture
in the iridescent surface, particularly at the edges of the piece.
And if the rich
color and the stretch iridescence aren't enough, well, our 2004
commemorative is in a magnificent cuspidor shape. This was a
particularly difficult piece to make, through its many stages of
re-heating and shaping. The difficulties and challenges of the
process have resulted in each item having its own characteristics
of shape, which may include minor bumps or slightly less than
perfect symmetry on the rim. Only 103 examples of this exceptional item
have been produced.

| 2003 |
The 2003 Edition of
the Woodsland Pine was produced in the original mould bowl shape, and the
color is Fenton's incredible Favrene. The exterior pattern is
the Flowers of the World pattern. Approximately 250 of
these pieces were produced. The marie is marked to
commemorate the 5th Annual Convention in St. Louis. Favrene
was first developed by Louis Comfort Tiffany as Blue Favrile. The
formula contains pure silver which is coaxed to the surface
through a series of cooling and re-heating steps. The finished
color is a breathtaking blue with vibrant iridescence. Favrene is
a rare and sought after color, usually made in limited editions.
We consider ourselves fortunate indeed that the Fenton Art Glass
Company agreed to produce this superb item for our club. |

giving the piece striking iridescence. Approximately 200 of
